KIDS  STUFF

This page is for you youngsters. Please feel free to e-mail any interesting stories, especially about the dentist, and any jokes, cartoons or messages of thanks to the practice. A free toothbrush for any material published!

CRISPS ARE BAD TOO !

Unfortunately you cannot substitute crisps for sweets. Because of the way that the crisps are made by cooking in very hot oil, some sugars are made from the potato. Then when you eat crisps they often stick to teeth for longer so these sugars have longer to decay your teeth.

Better to stick to cheese, milk or water, veg. or fruit.

WASH YOUR HANDS!

Often the wash basin you use to brush your teeth is in the same room as the toilet. It is not only important that you wash your hands after using the toilet, but also that you wash your hands BEFORE you use your toothbrush to clean your teeth. This is because it is easy for bacteria (bugs) to jump from your hands to your toothbrush where they can find it to be a nice warm and damp place to multiply very quickly. Then, the next time you use your toothbrush these bugs can jump into your mouth and find their way to your tummy or into the blood and make you poorly.

LITTLE AND OFTEN!

You do not need a lot of toothpaste on the toothbrush when you clean your teeth. A pea size amount will do. BUT it is much more important to brush your teeth as often as possible; after every meal. So, x3 per day is easy (after breakfast, after tea and last thing at night) and perhaps an extra on at the weekends as you will normally be at home for dinner.

Remember, the more good work you do with the toothbrush, the less the dentist will need to do with his drill to fill the holes in your teeth.

Sports can break teeth!

It is very important to be careful when playing sports of any kind where there is a chance of a knock to your front teeth in particular. I have had to repair broken front (big) teeth on three children recently who fell off bikes or boards or knocked heads playing soccer!

If you play sports regularly it is well worth getting your mum or dad to contact us in order to make a sports mouthguard to fit over the upper teeth and protect them. Better that then the pain of toothache and me drilling to repair them.

We can also offer accident insurance through Denplan membership. Contact the surgery for further details.

FIZZ, SWEETS AND SNACKS ARE BAD.

It is true  that fizzy drinks act like acid and dissolve your teeth. Next time you loose a baby tooth, keep it and put it into a glass with some Coke in it. After a couple of days it will have dissolved away.

Sweets and snacks will also produce acid to dissolve teeth and make holes that will need to be repaired at the dentist. Eat more at meal times, brush your teeth and then give them a rest so that they can repair themselves till the next meal time.
