VENEERS
These are thin,
custom laboratory-made porcelain “fronts” for teeth. They are
used to cover discolourations, and correct crooked teeth and
fill in gaps. They often require very little tooth removal and
function well after being bonded onto teeth. An easy way to
greatly improve your smile. As you can see below, these pitted,
stained and spaced teeth were transformed with veneer fronts.

IMPLANTS
Artificial tooth-root
replacements made from Titanium, and surgically inserted into
the bone. These are then used just like teeth to support crowns
or bridges. As good as the tooth they are replacing, and
sometimes better! We have a consultant restorative surgeon from
Sheffield Dental Hospital and another specialist from Manchester who come HERE to perform the surgery
under local anaesthetic to insure the best possible foundations
for the restorations later.
One of the cheapest and
most life enhancing benefits of implant treatment is to
eliminate the problems associated with loose full lower
dentures. With the placement of only two implants near the front
of the lower jaw, and a new full denture that fits over the top
of these and "CLICKS INTO PLACE" for firm retention that allows
you to talk as normal and restores the ability to eat a normal
diet. Get back to enjoying all the foods that you have avoided
for years! Contact for a consultation.
SAME DAY TEETH is
the new exciting option for those people who wish not to be
without teeth during the initial healing period. It is now possible to
remove any remaining teeth, or replace a denture by operating on
the jaw and fixing a full set of teeth in within one day. The
preferred protocol is now to restore the implant and load
(function with ) immediately wherever possible. We have an
arrangement with an oral surgeon to perform the surgery, usually
under local anaesthetic, possibly with sedation, at our own
surgery address. Further details on request.
As the science is better
understood year on year, we are able to manage more complex
cases in a simplified and predictable manner. This utilises
cad-cam technology to plan the full treatment in advance
within the computers software, provide the drilling guide and
complete surgery and restoration with fixed temporary bridges
all in one session, using the Nobel Guide Technique. We
are also now restoring with larger numbers of teeth on fewer
implants, especially in the lower jaw, using the All On Four
Technique. Exciting Times.

replacement of a missing upper front tooth, and the x-ray
appearance showing the "titanium root" inserted to support the
crown.

Less for multiples.
CROWNS and BRIDGES
Crowns are used
to restore badly broken down teeth. They can be made of several
materials; yellow gold, porcelain, or porcelain fused to gold
(bonded )and the material chosen depending on need or
aesthetics. Bridges are linked crowns to span the spaces of
missing teeth. In the case below, a combination of crowns and a
bridge to fill the gap has been used to transform this patient's
smile.

ORAL HYGIENE
The foundation of oral health is good oral
hygiene, which is an acquired skill. We have an excellent
hygienist who will first thoroughly clean the teeth and roots,
then spend time showing you how to keep them clean, and the gums
healthy. This will reduce treatment needs in the future.

The picture above shows
how good oral health can give you great "smile appeal" and the
confidence to smile rather than hide a less than appealing set
of teeth.
GENGIGEL is now being used
to supplement conventional treatment to improve healing and
reduce the soreness of several oral conditions with encouraging
results. We stock the product and is available at £5.50. (plus
p&P for postal orders)
We also run a fresh breath
clinic. Following discussions a treatment protocol is worked out
and additional aids including specific mouthwashes (eg. RetarDex
) may be used. See the article listed on the Home page.
Price £48 per half hour

Erosion and Tooth Wear is
an increasing problem and can be discussed and advice and
treatment offered.
ROOT CANAL
TREATMENT
Root Canal Treatment is
necessary when the nerve in the middle of the tooth is dead,
dying or too extensively damaged by trauma to recover. The
treatment involves removing the nerve tissue, preparing, shaping
and disinfecting the root canal and finally filling this space
usually with gutta perca. It is important that the tooth is then
restored with a good quality filling or crown to prevent
bacteria from the mouth re-entering the root canal system
causing the root treatment to fail with recurrent pain.
As can be seen in the two
examples below, the upper tooth had decay under an old filling
that caused the nerve to die, and the final appearance after the
root treatment but before the tooth was restored with a crown.
The second example shows a poor, short root treatment on a lower
tooth that has failed, and the after re-treatment showing that
the roots are now fully sealed and the infection at the end of
the root has healed.

TOOTH WHITENING
We are able to offer a comprehensive range of
cosmetic options to improve your smile. This may not need to
involve drilling. If your teeth are sound, but discoloured, we
can safely lighten the shade of the tooth, often by two or three
shades. This usually involves the use of gels, supplied by us,
supported round the teeth in a custom made soft tray, and used
at home under supervision. Takes 2 to 3 weeks to produce that
"bright, white" smile that can take years off your appearance,
improve self confidence and possible even get you a job or
promotion. Smile and presentation DO MATTER!
Please note that this option can only be
offered after a full assessment and discussions regarding all
other treatment alternatives.

PVC NIGHT GUARDS
There are an increasing number of patients who
grind their teeth, often during sleep, exerting high and
uncontrolled forces resulting in jaw pains, chipped teeth and
worn down front teeth which may impact on aesthetics and result
in costly cosmetic dentistry is untreated till too late.
An economical and non-intervention way of
mitigating these harmful forces is to wear a PVC night guard as
shown below, custom made from impressions of the mouth.

DENTURES

For some
patients, many or all of their teeth may have been lost. There
are many reasons for this, and although in most cases Titanium
Implants can be inserted to support replacement teeth, sometimes
partial or full dentures are required. We make every effort to
ensure that the best quality materials are used, custom
fabricated at our laboratory to be as natural-looking as
possible. The base material for partial dentures may be a metal
skeleton or the more traditional plastic. Full details on
request, or at the consultation.
Prices from £460,
to approx. £800 for metal based partials. Full/Full dentures
from £850
ORAL CANCER SCREENING
As part of our routine
dental consultations, we examine all the soft tissues in the
mouth for signs of pathology, including oral cancer. Indeed this
examination is a key element of the Oral Health Score for our
Denplan Excel Patients. Oral cancer, although rare, is on the
increase particularly in younger women. Lifestyle habits, like
alcohol consumption and smoking can dramatically increase the
risk of developing the disease.
Further details are
available on request.
SMILE CONFIDENCE
We offer a full range of
cosmetic treatment to enhance, change or modify your smile. A
great smile builds your confidence, warmly welcoming all you
greet. By increasing your self confidence, it may also improve
your promotion prospects too!
Please see the article in
the Current Topics called
First Impressions section for further advice, and a self
assessment questionnaire.
ORTHODONTICS
Appliances (Braces ) are used to move teeth,
which enhances the appearance as well as oral health generally.
This is because poor contacts between teeth and misalignment
allows plaque to build up which can cause both tooth decay and
poor gum health. Adults as well as children can be treated in
this way, as can be seen in this example of adult treatment
below.
INVISALIGN is the new
treatment option for adults where a series of aligner "plates"
are used on the inside of the teeth, rather than wires.
Therefore, NO WIRES and BRACKETS show. This has been very
popular in the USA for some time and is now gaining the same
support over here.
Final adjustments to the
tooth sizes and profiles will be completed with porcelain
veneers to maximize the aesthetics with minimal dentistry
avoiding significant tooth preparation had orthodontic movement
not been done first.
SPORTS MOUTHGUARDS
Many adults and
children are involved in activity sports, at different levels.
Some play regularly for school or local club teams, some
occasionally to keep fit, and for others it may be a passion.
The chances of accidental injury to one or more teeth can be a
real threat, only realized AFTER the event when the cost in
pain, embarrassment or the sometimes significant financial cost
to restore the problem occurs. It is much better to invest in a
protective sports mouthguard to prevent all of these problems.
An impression of your mouth and fitting later ensures that this
custom, precision made appliance should give several years
protection. Beware the cheap "do it yourself" kits available in
some sports shops which may not perform to expectations.

JAW JOINT PROBLEMS
Usually stress
related in origin, many people suffer from stiff, painful or
locking jaws. This is often associated with night grinding (Bruxing),
and can lead to headaches, neck aches and even stiff shoulders.
In many cases, after a consultation, we can quickly relieve most
of the symptoms without the need for complicated or even any
active dental treatment of the teeth. Advice, and impressions
for a Night Guard will usually suffice.
